Robert's Obituary
Robert Edward Martin, born on July 9, 1937, in Highland Park, Michigan, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025, in St. Joseph, Michigan. He was the cherished son of Robert and Margaret Martin and grew up alongside his two sisters, Connie Milligan and Barbara Saar.
Robert met the love of his life, Joan Gerhardt, while working at the General Motors Tech Center in Warren, Michigan. They began dating and married in 1955, engaging in a devoted partnership that lasted over 50 years until Joan's passing in 2005. Together, they raised six children: Michael Martin, Steven Martin (Amber), Cindy Gothard (Dan), Richard Martin (Ruth), Suzy Forraht (Doug), and Sharon Williams (Todd). His family grew to include 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Robert, known as Bob to his coworkers, dedicated his career to GM as well as repairing cars on the side in order to provide for his family. He was known for his expert craftsmanship, resourcefulness, and skill. There wasn't a thing he couldn't fix or figure out. He was truly a master of all trades. Despite being busy with work, he always found time to spend with his family traveling, camping, and boating. He especially enjoyed his hunting and fishing trips to Canada. In Robert's later years, he found fulfillment in woodworking, reading, and doing jigsaw puzzles.
A gifted storyteller, usually with a beer in hand, his tales brought laughter and connection to countless gatherings with family and friends. His life was a testament to love, creativity, and dedication. Robert’s warmth, dry sense of humor, and unwavering commitment to his family left an enduring legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, his wife Joan, sister Barbara, and son Michael. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends. May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him.
