Good morning. I will start with giving my sincere condolences to the Schanze family. Saying goodbye to Richard, who figuratively and physically was a presence to be reckoned with must not be easy. I was fortunate to experience, this presence. Richard was a gentle, kind, giving and loving person. Many, many fond memories that I can recall of my time around Richard. One doesn’t forget meeting him for the first time. He was all business but with a great smile. I would not be where I am today in my career as a chef had it not been for Richard. Dining over pizza he asked me what my plans were-what was I going to do with myself. My answer, I want to go to culinary school. Immediately Richard and Marilyn suggested I meet a graduate of a culinary school in Chicago. From there I was on a fast track to launch my journey into the hospitality industry. Just that small effort, showed how much Richard made the difference. He cared. He wanted others around him to succeed and be the best they could be. The legacy Richard is leaving behind will continue to live on in the Schanze family. His presence will always be remembered. Grateful. Thank you.

Sending condolences to the Schanze family. I worked for Dick at People State Bank for 15 years fresh out of college. He was a great leader. He had such a talent for creating teamwork and producing results. We worked hard, but also knew how to carve out time for fun. He also had a calling for community service and I recall him "donating" me to United Way for a couple of months in my early days. What a great example of finding a balance in life with work, fun, and community. I used many of Dick's tools of the trade in my subsequent years in the business. He set such a great example as a leader, it was hard not to try to emulate him. I was lucky and honored to work for him.

It was a privilege to work for this kind and generous man, early in my business career. Through his patient and professional example, I learned the importance of integrity, honesty, attention to detail, and a keen intellect. His door at the bank was open to anyone who needed his advice or to let off some steam. I admired his involvement in community organizations, his generosity, and his dedication to exercise and well-being. He also knew when it was time to get away, and he would announce, “Debbie, I hear the call of the elusive bluegill.” Thank you, “Mr. Schanze,” for all I learned from you.

So very sorry to learn of Richard’s death. Sooner or later half of every married couple has to suffer this loss. And it is awful. I always was grateful it was me because if meant Steve never had to experience it. May you feel God’s presence and know His peace. Hugs.
