Marie's Obituary

Marie Maloney, 73, of St. Joseph passed away Sunday, February 2, 2025, at the Caretel Inn of St. Joseph.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 10:30 AM, at St. Bernard Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 – 6:00 PM on Thursday with a time of sharing at 6:00 PM at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. Marie was born on October 11, 1951, to Richard & Marie (Vitale) Birrer in Paterson, NJ.

She married Paul Maloney on August 5, 1972 in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, and moved to St. Joseph in 1975. She was an educator for over 30 years, including Parish Sunday School and French Language studies at various high schools. Her career culminated with 16 years teaching high school English & Literature at River Valley High School, where she also led the school’s Yearbook Club.

Marie was an avid supporter and lover of the arts. She studied and taught various forms of dance in her community. At RVHS, she directed and coordinated the school’s spring play every year. She enjoyed drawing and painting with a proclivity for pencil and charcoal. She had a lifetime passion for the outdoors and being in nature, including gardening, nature walks, and caring for her home landscapes.

She is survived by her husband Paul Maloney of St. Joseph; children, Paul (Karolina) Maloney of Inverness, IL, Elizabeth (Matthew) Gehrt of Kennett Square, PA and Theresa Maloney of Philadelphia, PA; 8 grandchildren Jacob, Benjamin, William, Brooklyn, Genevieve, Brady, Banks, and Penelope; two brothers, Dr. Richard (Christina) Birrer, Dr. Michael (Elizabeth) Birrer.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
