Lance's Obituary
Lance Daniel Covey, born on March 20, 1948, and passed on November 15, 2024, was a dedicated craftsman, local business owner, and creative woodworker. He was known to many in South Haven through his business, Blue Star Glass, which he ran together with his father, AB Covey.
Lance had a talent for restoration. He restored a wooden rowboat to pristine beauty and kept a fleet of classic tractors ready to ride. His wood collection filled his imagination with intricate grained bowls, table tops and furniture. His 1968 BSA motorcycle shined ready for a twisty road.
Lance was known for his interest in dragon boating and for bringing dragon boat racing to the South Haven HarborFest. He steered many boats to the finish and raced internationally with a team based in Dubuque, Iowa.
Lance was hale and strong. He beat leukemia in 2008 and lived many years in remission. He could often be found in his workshop diving into projects or out in the yard hard at work. He died from a collection of ailments that ultimately overwhelmed his body’s ability to sustain.
His memory will live on in the grain of turned walnut, in the joy of a day on the water, in the satisfaction of a job well done, and in the hearts of his family and friends.
Lance is survived by his wife, Judith; children, Spencer Covey and Derek (Aya) Covey; grandchildren, Jacob Covey, Wrenley Wilde, and Forest Wilde; brother, Bruce (Linda) Covey, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, AB Covey and Shirley (Villwork) Covey.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Maritime Museum of South Haven.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Filbrandt Chapel - Starks Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. 269-637-0333
