Edith's Obituary
Edie was born to Arthur and Marian (Pearce) Strebeck on September 24, 1931 in South Haven, Michigan. She grew up in South Haven, as a child attending the one-room Law schoolhouse where she first met future husband Edwin Jakubs. First in her family to graduate from college, she earned a Bachelor’s and later a Master’s degree in education from Western Michigan University and entered a career in teaching.
Edie taught elementary school children for 26 years in Battle Creek and Wyoming, Michigan, specializing in reading skills and in encouraging any student who needed extra help. In later years, she often met students who remembered her fondly as an important influence in their lives. They were all “her kids.”
Edie married Edwin Jakubs in 1979, and greatly enjoyed the family of children and later grandchildren this brought into her life. She was a “cool Aunt” to her nieces and nephews. Always adventurous and open to new experiences, she and Ed loved to travel, visiting Europe enjoying the cruise ship experience. They visited Poland several times, forming a lasting connection with Ed’s family there.
Edie was very active in her church and the South Haven community. She belonged to the Garden Club and volunteered for the Hospital Auxiliary. She was a long-time member and supporter of the historic Scott Club. She loved spending time with family and friends -- especially the children.
Edie was the last of her generation. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edwin Jakubs, sisters Julia Holbrook and Frances Braybrook, and brother Martin Strebeck. She is survived by stepchildren Janet (Karl) Price, John (Paula) Jakubs, Jim (Missy) Jakubs, Jerry (Cindy) Jakubs, six nephews, five nieces, nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous friends. She will be sadly missed by all that knew her.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, August 27 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 429 Michigan Ave., South Haven. Funeral Service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the church with Pastor Stephanie Norton officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Filbrandt Chapel-Starks Family Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. 269-637-0333.
