How can one describe the man, friend, philosopher, that was Arthur. We've known him for a very long time, and always looked for his friendly face upon arriving at Mismaloya. Eating alone - not for long. Arthur was alway a willing table partner. Loved the twinkle in his eye as he cajoled one more glass of wine from the waiter. Such a gentle man, and a gentleman was Arthur. Kind to the 9th degree. When he lost Norma, he was a sea for a while, but his Mismaloya friends rallied round and soon had him smiling again. Now, he can rest at peace with his beloved Norma. We know he will be greatly missed by many, especially his loving daughter Hilary, and granddaughter Margo. Vaya con dios Arthur.

Arthur was the grandfather of our niece, Margo, but we never met him. November 2, 2024, our Matriarch, Margo's French-Spanish grandmother, passed. She was 3 months elder than Arthur and left us exactly 3 months earlier. My mother spoke of Arthur with respect and gratitude , the Patriarch of our Anglo-American family, and asked Juan how he was doing in her last moments. She had especially fond memories of the kindness of Norma. Thanks to them, we knew that Juan had an extended family in Chicago; he was far away but not alone. No matter, how old our parents are, when they leave us, it's a very painful event. When he is the last one of his generation, the whole family construction is fundamentally changed. Expatriation is the cement that binds our two families together. One day, my parents left their country, Spain, with their first-born child. Thus, our Spanish family became french. Arthur, you left your dear England with your wonderful wife and your children, crossed the Atlantic, so that some of your children became American and some of your grandchildren were born American. We move to another country; the family roots change. My brother, Juan, left France, and you and your family became his family. Dear Grandpa,

You will be missed so much. Those summers were such a warm place for me, nothing like it. You made me feel so at home and I could listen to your stories all day. I’ll miss the mornings in the sunroom or you coming to check what fish we caught for the day (usually empty handed). I’ll miss the talks by the pool and the exquisite family dinners. I’ll always appreciate those golden nuggets of advice you planted in my mind during the years. I know you’re in a better place now and I hope to make you proud during my time here as we were all so proud of you.

Arthur was truly a delight to spend time with. On the occasional visit to the Galien farmhouse with Curt, I was encouraged to take a spin with him in the golf cart around the pond, getting a closer look at the rock cairns and all the lovely plantings, or to sit and relax under the grape Arbor and chat about the current project he was working on. Arthur had a positive, joyful outlook on life that was contagious and inspiring. We will miss his phone calls to discuss fix-it projects and troubleshooting, and the often heard comment “I’ll have to talk to the higher power“ ( Hillary) , before firming up plans for repairs, that always made us smile. Arthur has been a special part of our lives for many years and we cherish the memories of that friendship, our deepest sympathy, Hillary, to you and the family that he loved so dearly

Grandpa. A great great Grandpa one of the best I say to people, always making jokes, telling “stories” “projects” beyond what i could imagine we could make them like but he made them his to make a beautiful house for all of us to stay at in Michigan. Ide live to go up there at the end of every week during my schooling and would always grab a chance to go up and spend it at that amazing house and with that amazing, smart, funny, family found man. he has left us but will always be in my heart.

What can we say....we lost one of the best ….. my brother in-law Arthur Bailes. He was my husband Colin Bailes eldest brother by 26 years. Because of the large age gap and their lives taking different roads across the world they never really got to know each other until the last 10 years. But they developed a bond as brothers do...It started when Colin immigrated to the USA after we were married and we visited Arthur and his wife Norma at their beautiful farmhouse in Michigan. We then visited Arthur and Norma at their winter home in Puerto Vallarta where we fell in love with the town and now where we call our second home. We were so lucky to spend so much time with him here in Puerto Vallarta over the last several years. Rest easy my friend and we are happy that you are now reunited with your love Norma. We will miss you and all of our fun times at La Jolla, it will never be the same again. Our thoughts and love with Hilary, Martin and Adrian and their families at this sad time.

We all knew it will come one day, and while we wish he would still be here with us, we feel blessed that we had to enjoy his presence among us for so long. First, he was the cement of our family, our Patriarch. And what a Patriarch he was, with a life story bigger than life itself. Then we will miss the simple rolling of days at the farm in Michigan. Days filled with his humor, his never ending projects and the lists of "things to do" that go with them. We will miss the 6 o'clock Gin & Tonic that was served at a quarter to, because why waiting so long? We will miss him and cherish dearly his memory and the memories of the time we spent with him. He has a place in our aching heart forever.

Arthur always welcomed me as a dear friend, and that we were. My girls and I visited Arthur, Norma, Hilary, and Margo many times in Galien. There was always swimming and shopping and chatting by the fire and cooking and napping and cocktails and dinner at the end of each special day. But the thing about Arthur was that he made me feel special. We connected and had many conversations about art and books and his amazing life. And as if that wasn't enough, he always had a thoughtful question for me and was sincerely interested in my life. His projects around his home (which included building a rock garden extending the full length and at least half the width of the pool) were truly inspired works of art. Everywhere you looked there was Arthur, busy, planning, thinking, creating, engaged with people, engaged in life. He felt things deeply, was extremely honest, kind, and generous with his time, his brilliance, and his love. My sincerest condolences to you Hilary, Margo, and Martin and to your entire family. I am grateful to have known Arthur.

Arthur led an amazing life and I'm so glad to have met and gotten to know him as well as his lovely wife, Norma. I remember when I came to Michigan for a friend's wedding and Arthur and Norma so graciously invited me to stay with them at their lovely home in Galien. We had a wonderful visit and I remember looking over old photographs of the many places they'd lived and Arthur reminiscing and recounting his many stories from his remarkable life over gin and tonics. My heart goes out to Hilary, Margo and the Bailes family. Arthur's life was truly a life well lived!

What a remarkable life your Dad led! I will carry in my own heart - the twinkle in his eyes, laughter and his utmost love for the joy life – finding beauty, creating beauty and telling tales. I remember 30 + years ago when I was invited to one of my then, new friend Hilary’s parents Christmas parties. It was the first time I had met Arthur and Norma - and it was a lively evening in their home humming with friends, music and English trifle. It makes my heart sing to remember that night – and I pause now to say a prayer of gratitude for long time friendships. Thank you, Arthur, for the love you brought this world. I know that my dear friend and your beautiful daughter Hilary will continue to shower this world with your love that lives on in her.

Dear Travis and Mark, our friendship has lasted for decades, it seems so long ago, but now only like yesterday . Travis and I meeting at the bus stop on our way to work. Then I introducing her to my wonderful friend Mark, now married forever. I am so happy you knew my Mum and Dad, and got to see their joy in life. Your visits to our Michigan home were always so welcome and enjoyable, Dad knew that you both meant so much to me and that he felt comfortable I was with friends like you who would help me through, and you did and are. Their annual Christmas parties in Ukrainian village, Chicago, were always full with friends from all walks of their lives. Live music and singing from R&B, even the Ukrainian priest was dancing! They found friends who appreciated the joy, were mutually inspiring, and good people. Dad knew you were part of this personal community. Thank you for being there.

My friendship with Arthur began about 10 years ago. I was his handyman. Through the years I not only fixed countless things but got to know Arthur personally. Sometimes I think he called me to repair something just so that we could spend time talking. What a wonderful person he was. What a fantastic life he led. I learned so much from him and was still learning on the last day that we spent time together. He was a remarkable man. I will truly miss him.

From the moment I met Arthur through visits to the gallery with Hilary, he made me feel like family. Arthur had a way of making everyone around him feel special, and his genuine interest in my gallery, and in me, was something I’ll always treasure. His warmth and curiosity were unmatched. As I learned more about his remarkable life, I was in awe of all he had achieved, his time as an MI6 operative, his work in antiquities, and the depth of his knowledge and experience. Arthur was a man of extraordinary talent and integrity, someone who was truly worthy of admiration. But what stood out most about him was his joyful demeanor and his kindness. Arthur impacted everyone he met, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have known him. His presence was truly one of a kind, and I will genuinely miss it. Rest in peace, Arthur. You will never be forgotten.

Dear Judy, From the moment we walked into your Gallery for the first time you were so welcoming and from that point on it bacame a weekend destination where we knew we could discuss everything. He greatly admired you, but it was your warmth, intellect, humor and compassion that endured into a wonderful long friendship for us all. Even though Contemporary Art wasnt necessarily his favorite, our discussions about the works you displayed were stimulating, right away he'd say what he admired, what he didnt, he had an eye for a good artist and appreciated looking and talking about the works and what he liked. He was always open to new ideas. And you took it all in good faith. He was always excited to come for a visit, mainly because of you. Then more recently, you visiting him in the home, I'd tell him you were planning on coming soon and hed ask "when is Judy coming again?" Thank you for everything, you helped make his last years in Michigan more fun! Even though dad has gone, our friendship will carry on and more the best for me knowing that you knew him. X

I first met Arthur and Norma over 10 years ago in Mismaloya. Being a fellow Brit we hit it off straight away, his dry sense of humor was contagious as were his many life stories. His compassion thru Normas illness was extraordinary and showed true love. I spent many a lunchtime with Arthur here in his favourite place La Jolla and will miss the many laughs and mischief we caused. A true gentleman with a massive heart, I will miss him but will never forget. Condolences to all his family….

Dear Mark, I knew years ago what good friends you'd become. 'Mark from London'. When he told me how much he enjoyed your company, partners in crime: with your British humor: puns, wit, self-deprecation and innuendo, I can only imagine what a joy for him to have you as a lunch mate. More than that though you shared time with Dad and Mum, knew what was important to him, and had a serious appreciation and respect of each other. Your face times with Dad over the summer after his fall, then most recently in the home with his decline. You offered compassion, generosity of spirit, understanding and possitivity when he needed it. He was always left feeling better hearing from you. Thank you for being part of his life, he admired and enjoyed your company very much, your generosity will never be forgotten. Hilary.

In Loving Memory of Arthur Bailes It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Arthur Bailes, a true gentleman in every sense of the word. Arthur was a kind, caring, and generous man who touched the lives of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. One of the most cherished moments of my life was when he stepped in to walk me down the aisle in Mexico after my dad passed away. It was a bittersweet occasion, but having Uncle Arthur by my side filled my heart with pride and happiness. He gave me strength in that moment, and I will always be grateful for his love and support. It was also so special to have Auntie Norma there, sharing in such a meaningful day. Seeing Hilary, Margo, and Adrian there as well made the occasion even more wonderful—it meant the world to have them all together, celebrating such a special moment in my life.

Arthur was a man of warmth and integrity, always ready with a smile and a kind word. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a deep love for his family, and a way of making everyone feel at ease. His presence brought comfort and joy, and his wisdom and kindness left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever—stories filled with laughter, love, and the simple joys of life. Though he may no longer be with us, his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Rest in peace, Uncle Arthur. You will be deeply missed, but your love and legacy will remain with us always.

Such a beautiful memory for him Amanda. Made me cry! He was very proud to walk you down the aisle, and for the family to be there with you. He wrote about it in one of books, which I'll send you a copy later. He often spoke about you, Chris, your sons; Charlie and Francis, sister; Nicola and her daughter Daisy, and meeting other relatives and friends from both sides of the family. Mum and Dad cherished that wedding celebration and they loved you all throughout their lives. Your visits to the US to see them meant a lot to them as did my visits with Margo to spend time with you all in the UK. Thank you Amanda and family. His presence will always be with us. X

Uncle Arthur was truly an amazing man, I will cherish all his stories about is life experience's. He was kind and generous and looked after us aIl. I have so many fond memories of you and Auntie Norma, visiting you both in Michigan and Chicago. Staying in the converted chicken coop you teaching Daisy to drive the tractor. Also Amanda and Chris getting married in Mexico where we were all together as a family. Watching how proud you were walking Amanda down the aisle. We will miss you dearly. Nicola and Daisy xxx

Dear Nicola, Thank you for your precious memories, it means so much to me and Dad would be proud. How Mum and Dad loved you and Amanda, always a special place for you both in their hearts.
Your and Daisy's visit to them in Michigan meant the world to them, they were proud of their converted Hen house. It's been Margo and my refuge for years since. The buggy: where he taught Daisy to drive years ago, believe it or not, is still going strong, and then grandchildren Max, Alex and Margo also had driving lessons with Dad on that! The 'Geordie' North England side of our family are very special for us, always a part of our lives and in Dads heart for where he met Mum and changed the direction of their lives. He truly loved you both. X

So many wonderful experiences and stories‼️ we met Arthur over 20 years ago at the La Jolle de Mismaloya resort and then later connected at the condominiums.....discovering that we lived 20 minutes apart in Michigan...we spent many good times together in Michigan & Mexico..... and we will miss him terribly.... Arthur and Norma were neighbour's and friends at our condo in Mismaloya Mexico. He was a wonderful mam N with whom I had many conversations..memories etc. Our wives passed within months of each other and we remained fgignds as he continued to return to mexico until this past year. He will be missed. Condolences to the family on their loss.

To Dearest Tere, You just happened like an Angel. You were my ears and eyes when Dad needed help whilst in Mexico. You were always there to see if he was Ok when I couldn’t be there. Every morning checking in on him, “ she comes in and strokes my forehead and then leaves” You took him to numerous doctors appointments, took great care of him so he could be with you all last year and previously. Your devotion to him and love was incredible. He loved you very much as do I. No words can express my and our families gratitude. Plus he had a lot of good times with you, Marv and your family! X

I first met Arthur through his daughter, Hilary. There were several summers when I would visit his home in Michigan, spending weekends with him, Hilary, Margo, and Naomi. Arthur always had such a cheerful spirit, and his presence lit up every room we were in. He would share stories from his younger days, and I was always amazed by the incredible things he accomplished in his life. I will forever cherish his kindness and the warmth of his laughter. He will be deeply missed.
