Bernt “Bernie” Philip Benson, 61, of South Haven, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2016 at his home. He was born December 1, 1954 in Fargo, North Dakota. His parents were Howard and Janet (Aberg) Benson.  Bernie worked as a Senior Reactor Operator and held other roles at Palisades Nuclear Power Plant for 33 years. He married Dawn Powers on August 27, 1988 in South Haven. Having played in high school and college at the University of Minnesota at Mankato as quarterback, Bernie loved football and cheered for the Detroit Lions. Bernie was an avid fisherman and was a member of the South Haven Steel Headers. He served his country in the United States Navy.

He is preceded in death by his father – Howard Benson.

Bernie is survived by his wife – Dawn Benson of South Haven, children – Amber (Joshua) Evans of Gobles, Kurt Benson of the United States Navy – Japan, Amanda (Kyle) Brott of Kalamazoo, Brandon (Heather) Benson of Plymouth, Minnesota, Brad of Madison, Wisconsin and Mark of Lacrosse, Wisconsin, siblings – Bryan, Jane, and Carrie, and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Friday, October 14, 2016 at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home of South Haven. Memorial services will follow visitation at 12:00 PM with Pastor Travis Wilson officiating at the funeral home. Contributions may be made in Bernie’s memory to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22478 Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73123.
