Dr. Frederick's Obituary

Dr. Frederick Locke Clement, 86, of Glenn, Michigan died at home on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 with his family around him.
He was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1924 of Marion Lois Locke and Frederick Walter Clement and attended high school at Upper Canada College in Ontario, and medical school at both Case Western Reserve University in Ohio (1944-1945) and the University of Toronto, graduating in 1948. He accomplished his medical internship in Hartford, CT from 1948 to 1950.
Dr. Clement enlisted in the US Navy in 1950 where he served one year in Korea from 1950 to 1951 on the hospital ship USS Haven as a surgeon. He then spent one year at the Naval Shipyard in Charleston, South Carolina from 1951 to 1952. He carried out his surgical residency at Case Western Reserve University from 1952 to 1956.
In 1949 he was married to Margaret Jayne (née Morrison) Clement, Kalamazoo, Michigan, in Fergus, Ontario and again in 1989 to Marilyn (née McKillop Hare) Clement, Glenn, Michigan, on Lake Temagami, Ontario.
His first job, at age 16, was on a Great Lakes freighter. Dr. Clement was a general and vascular surgeon with Surgical Associates of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Cooper, Callander, and Clement) until his retirement at age 66. He served as Chief of Surgery at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for two years, and on its Board of Trustees for four years. After retiring, he traveled with his wife Marilyn to Kenya, spending six months (1990-1991) as a volunteer surgeon at the Tumutumu Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) Hospital. As an instrument-trained private pilot, he flew a Cessna and Seneca airplanes for many years, and was one of a 4-person team called Medic Air, a hospital ambulance service. His deep love of the northern waters prompted him to buy a small island in Lake Temagami, Ontario where he spent time with family every summer since 1985.
Dr. Clement was not only a husband, a father, a grandfather and a pioneer vascular surgeon. He was also a maple sap gatherer, biker, free-thinker, skier, mentor, movie critic and reader, canoe-maker, woodsman, baker, a good neighbor, and a furniture-maker. He loved spring because like this one, springs are full of hope. He showed all of us a path.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn, and his four children: David Morrison Clement (Betsy Weiss) of Orono, Maine; Margaret (Peg) Locke Clement of Burlington, Vermont; James Frederick Clement (Barbara Schneider) of Seattle, Washington; and Susan Clement (Charlie) Wilson of Santa Fe, New Mexico. He leaves three step-children: James Duncan (Belinda) Hare of Plano, Texas; Victoria Nina (Howard) Kennedy of Boulder, Colorado; and Jessica Anne Hare of Glen Gardner, New Jersey. He leaves four grandchildren: Rachel Weiss Clement, Timothy Weiss Clement, Stephanie Elisabeth Clement, and Sarah Jane Clement, and step-grandchildren Amanda Hare, Christina Hare, and Sophie Anne Kennedy. His sister Jean Marion (née Clement) Tompkins predeceased him on February 11 of this year, age 90.
In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to Al Van, 73303 8th Ave., South Haven, Michigan 49090.
Cremations arrangements are being managed by Filbrandt Family Funeral Home of South Haven, Michigan, www.filbrandtffh.com. The family will hold a memorial service at a later date.
