Virgil's Obituary

Virgil E. Schmaltz, 96, formerly of Bainbridge Center, passed away, Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at Caretel Inns where he most recently resided.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 3:00 P.M. Saturday, October 5, 2024 at Salem Lutheran Church, 275 Marvin, Coloma with Rev. Alex Hoffmeyer officiating. Friends may visit with the family beginning at 2P.M. Saturday at the Church. Private Burial will take place at a later date at North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma. Memorial donations in Virgil’s name may be made to Salem Lutheran Church. Arrangements are entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel, St. Joseph. Virgil was born April 7, 1928 in Frazee, Minnesota to Henry & Elsie Schmaltz. After moving to Bainbridge Center, he graduated from Watervliet High School, Class of 1947. On July 3, 1948, he married the former Marie Jarvis at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Joseph. Virgil was employed for twenty-eight years at Whirlpool in St. Joseph, retiring in 1974, when he took over the family fruit & vegetable farm in Bainbridge Center, which he operated until 2013.

Virgil was a member of Salem Lutheran Church where he served on the board of elders and as treasurer for many years. He learned to fly and loved soaring the skies in small planes, riding his Harley, boating, snowmobiling, deer hunting at the cabin in Baldwin and ice fishing on Star Lake. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Virgil is survived by his children-David (Janice) Schmaltz of St. Joseph, Debra Fuller of Scottsdale, AZ, Denise (Jaime) Lenardson of St. Joseph; six grandchildren-Dawn (Michelle) Hopkins, Ryan (Juliana) Schmaltz, Brandon Schmaltz, Joshua G. Fuller, Jessica (John) Leonard, Ali Lenardson; seven great-grandchildren-Aiden, Michala, Jaxson Hopkins, Owen, Luke & Reese Fuller, Henry Lenardson; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Marie on February 7, 1992, his sister Fern H. Schmaltz, and by a grand-daughter Darcie Marie Vugrinovich.
