Vera's Obituary
Veronica Lorraine Gill of Benton Harbor, passed away Tuesday, January 21, at the Comfort Living Home in Dowagiac, MI.
Veronica, affectionately called “Vera” by her family and friends was born on June 20, 1961, in Benton Harbor, MI, one of four children born to Reginald Smith Gill and Barbara Sharon (Lacy) Gill-McGinnis.
Vera received her formal education in Philadelphia, PA, Bainbridge, MD and Benton Harbor, MI. During her time in the Benton Harbor Area Schools, Vera was in the band and was active from Middle School through High School and played percussion. Vera also enjoyed sports and played basketball at Hull Middle School and was on the track team at BHHS. In 1979 the Benton Harbor 880 relay team set a Rotary Meet Record and an all-time southwestern Michigan mark of 1:43.5 of which she was a member. Vera also attended Grand Valley State University and Lake Michigan College. Vera played in the band at Grand Valley State University as well.
Vera enjoyed spending time with family and loved talking to her nieces and nephews encouraging them to do well in school. Vera was thoughtful and caring and always would call to see how you were doing. She continued to have a love for music and enjoyed watching a good basketball game. The Boston Celtics and the Lakers were her favorite teams. Vera will be greatly missed.
Vera is survived by her sisters, Toni Gill-Pearson of Benton Harbor, MI, Regina Gill-Cook, and Linda Gill-Robinson both of Lithonia, GA; brothers Reinaldo (Marion) Tripplett of Benton Harbor, Larry (Kelly) Freeze of Ogden, UT; uncle, aunts, many nieces and nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, Reginald Smith Gill and Barbara Sharon (Lacy) Gill-McGinnis.
A Memorial Service for Vera will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 5 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph, MI 49085. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Those wishing to sign Vera’s Memory Book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com.
