Susan's Obituary
Susan Ann Spans, 81 of Fennville, passed away Friday, March 8, 2024. Born on March 24, 1942 in Harvey Illinois to John and Laurie Roche.
Susan is survived by her husband of 45 years, Terry Spans, children; Donald (Barbara) Hemmerling III, Christine Hemmerling, Michelle (Phil) Pikoz, Jonalee (James) Maslanka, Mary (Chris) Koorey, Peter Spans, Michael Spans, Sixteen Grandchildren and Eight Great-Grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her parents, John and Laurie Roche, first husband Donald Joseph Hemmerling Jr., brother-in-law Greg Hemmerling, and sister Jackie Roche.
Susan graduated from Thornton High School and then went on to beautician school. She met her first husband Don during her highschool days. They married and together had 4 children. Faith and Family were very important to Susan. In 1969, she became a member of the World Apostolate of Fatima, Our Lady’s Blue Army, and in 1972 she joined the St. Benedict 3rd order Lay Carmelites in Blue Island, Illinois. After the passing of her husband Don in 1977, Sue met and eventually married Terry Spans. The family moved to Fennville , MI in 1978. There they had three children together. In 1991 Susan joined the St. Peter 3rd Order Lay Carmelite Chapter. Susan tried daily to live out her faith and the motto of learn, live and spread the Fatima Message. She loved making people laugh, dancing, and singing. She was a rare gem, genuine, caring, and loving. She will be deeply missed by family, friends, and her Beloved husband Terry Spans.
Visitation for Susan will be held Monday, March 11, 2024 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Rosary at Filbrandt Chapel, 1076 S. Bailey Ave, South Haven, Michigan 49090. Visitation will continue Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at Sacred Heart - St. Stanislaus Parish, 2036 20th St. Allegan, Michigan 49010 from 10 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Fr. James Adams will officiate. Susan will be laid to rest in Douglas Cemetery.
