Shirley's Obituary
Shirley was born on April 9, 1941 in Michigan City, IN to the late Jack and Irene (Batzel) Salat.
On Oct. 8, 1960 at St. Mary of the Lake Church in New Buffalo she married John William Basinger. She was a life-long member of the St. Mary’s Church, and was also a member of the Rosary and Altar Society. Shirley was a creative soul, and enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and loved decorating and having family and friends for the holidays. She was an accepting friend to all. Shirley was especially adored by her family, and was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Shirley is survived by her husband John -of over 62 years; her children Daniel Basinger of New Buffalo, Anthony (Nancy) Basinger of LaPorte, Mark (Trish) Basinger of LaPorte, Julie Schavey of Chesterton and Tammy (Greg) Hutcheson of Grand Haven; grandchildren – Brad, Ashley, Casey, Samantha, Brenna, Spencer, Jacob, Ryan, Holly and Delaney; twenty great grandchildren; brothers – James (Jackie) Salat of Michigan City and Thomas (Anita) Salat of Michigan City; and sisters – Sandra Church of LaPorte and Stella (Don) Schweizer of Michigan City. She is preceded in death by brothers – Richard Batzel and Andrew Salat.
Visitation with the family is on Monday – May 1, from 4:00-7:00pm, at Sommerfeld Chapel in New Buffalo. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday – May 2, 11:00am, at St. Mary of the Lake Church, 718 W. Buffalo St., New Buffalo, with Father Ed Cronin officiating. Burial follows at Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo. Memorial contributions May be made to Heart of the Nation – Catholic Mass at P.O.
