Dick's Obituary
Richard O. (Dick) Moore, born to Lloyde and Margaret Moore in South Bend, Indiana, passed away peacefully on his 98th birthday at Brentwood at Niles on November 17, 2024. Dick resided at Brentwood for the past few years along with his wife Eileen (Fry) Moore who passed in 2020. They were married for 75 years.
Dick and Eileen spent the first few months of their marriage in Texas and Colorado where Dick was stationed in the Army Air Corps. After he was discharged in 1945, they moved back to South Bend and built a home on 10 acres southwest of town. There they raised their four children: Gary (Sandy) Moore, Gail (Rick, deceased) Moody, Sandi (Brian) Stalker, and Mark (Sue) Moore. Dick was pre-deceased by his eldest son, Gary in 2021.
Dick was employed for many years at Gates Chevrolet dealership in South Bend, ending his time there as Assistant Parts Manager. In 1970 Dick and Eileen moved to Kewanna, Indiana and purchased a summer resort on Lake Bruce. Named Hoosier Hideaway, it consisted of a restaurant, bait shop, boat livery, camping area, lakefront rental cottages and a 70-unit mobile home park. Dick thrived at Hoosier Hideaway as he was always outgoing and friendly and enjoyed the many people he met over the years there. His jack-of-all-trades building and repair skills were well suited for the operation of the resort.
After 16 successful years at Hoosier Hideaway, Dick and Eileen sold the resort and retired to 30 wooded acres near Buchanan, Michigan to be nearer their grown children, 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. There they built a new home which they enjoyed for many years.
Dick enjoyed working with wood and sawed his own lumber from trees on their property to produce cabinetry and trim for the home. He also made live edge benches, toys, household and decorative items that he sold at craft shows.
Other hobbies he enjoyed were making cider on his own cider press and producing maple syrup from sap he collected from trees on the property.
He volunteered at Pears Mill in Buchanan and was involved for many years in the Soap Box Derby. Those who know Dick will remember him for his fun-loving sense of humor and faithful friendship. He was a great husband and father and a devout Christian. He and Eileen were always active in the Methodist church wherever they lived.
Final arrangements have been entrusted to Swem Chapel in Buchanan. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.swemchapel.com. Memorial gifts can be made to Pears Mill in Buchanan or Faith Global Methodist Church in Buchanan.
