Mac's Obituary
Richard Lee McGuire
11/20/51 - 10/28/24
Richard Lee (Mac)McGuire was born 11/20/51 in Decatur, Illinois and grew up in Warrensburg, Il working on the family soybean and black Angus farm from a young age. Nicknamed the “McGuire Miracle Baby” by the local papers, his family survived an EF3 tornado while his mother was pregnant with him, although their home would be destroyed. His pregnant mother courageously walked in the driving storm to find help and safety. Active in 4H and a star athlete in multiple sports, Mac graduated from Warrensburg Latham HS in 1969 and went on to graduate from Illinois State University in 1973, where he played basketball and then rugby, which was a sport he loved and continued to pursue for decades after college, and a source of many lifelong friendships. After ISU, his love of nature drew him to Colorado and he later went on to settle in Elbert, CO where he raised his children. An accomplished carpenter, he spent several years building homes and later went on to teach history and coach basketball and football, taking teams to the state championships. In 2012 he moved to Union Pier where he had reunited with his college love. He went back into home building/remodeling and happily retired in 2022. Mac fought a tough and brave 6-month battle against an aggressive cancer.
He is survived by his ever loving partner Jan Smith (Union Pier), children Bly McGuire (Jimmie Sue) and granddaughter Charlie Ann of Paradise, TX and Lyndsey Denton (Ryan) and grandsons Rory and Ronan of Blackhawk, CO, Patrick Smith of Chicago, IL, Ryan Wedekind of Dunlap, TN, Dustin Wedekind of San Diego, CA, sister Ann Edgecombe (John) of Jacksonville, FL, Jerry Burns (Susie) of Hot Springs Village, AK and many wonderful and loving friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Linda, brother Tom and parents, Harriet and Charles. A truly wonderful guy who will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. A celebration of life service to be held Thursday, December 5th at 11:00 am EST at the Acorn Theatre in Three Oaks MI followed by a luncheon. All are invited.
