Hubert's Obituary

Pershing “Hubert” Helms, Jr., 69, of New Buffalo, MI, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at the Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville, MI. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sommerfeld Chapel – 15 N. Barton St., New Buffalo, MI.

Hubert was born on March 10, 1955, in Little Rock, AR, to the late Pershing Hubert and Mary Lee (Moore) Helms. He was a 1973 graduate of New Buffalo High School and a lifelong, die-hard Chicago Cubs fan.

Hubert had a deep passion for sports and in his younger years played roller hockey and softball. He spent countless hours on the rink and the field, making lifelong friendships along the way. The camaraderie and competition of the game were just as important to him as the sport itself, and he cherished the memories and bonds he formed.

Hubert worked at Swan Lake Golf Resort, where he took great pride in his job and the people he worked with. His coworkers became like a second family, and he truly enjoyed the friendships he built over the years. The relationships he formed there meant a lot to him, whether sharing laughs, or just enjoying a day at work, Hubert took pride in what he did and he valued the sense of community and connection that came with his work.

Above all, Hubert loved his family. He is survived by his daughter, Lora (Billy) Sparks of LaPorte, IN, and his son, Matt (Gina) Helms of New Buffalo, MI; grandchildren David, Keenon, Maddie, and CJ; and great-grandchildren Maiya and Daniel. He is also survived by his sisters, Cookie (Al) Jumche of Michigan City, IN, Joan (Fred) Wyse of New Buffalo, and Mary Bell of Colorado, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandchild, Claire Marie; his brothers, James Helms and Billy Joe Helms; and his sister, Sandra Kay Helms.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 15th, 2025 at 1:00 PM (EST) at the New Buffalo American Legion Post #169. Following the service, family and friends are invited to stay for lunch and fellowship until 5:00 PM.
In true Hubert fashion, the family encourages casual attire. As Hubert was a lifelong Chicago sports fan, you are encouraged to wear any Chicago sports team gear in his honor.

Hubert will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his infectious sense of humor, and his passion for sports and friendship. He found joy in the simple things—good company, a great game, and sharing laughter with those he loved. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and cherished him.
