Norm's Obituary

Norman E. “Norm” Striegle, 96, of Niles, passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at Woodland Terrace of Niles. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, February 25 at Swem Chapel, 301 W. Front St., Buchanan with Pastor Williams Walters officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am, service at 11:00 am. and burial with military honors to follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.swemchapel.com.

Norm was born on September 1, 1928, in Grand Rapids to Lewis and Lisle (Rogers) Striegle. While a senior in high school, Norm proudly enlisted in the United States Army. While with the 82nd Airborne, his unit marched in the funeral procession for Gen. John Pershing. He was stationed in Korea during the signing of the Armistice. He proudly served our country for 20 years before retiring from the army. On December 29, 1948, Norm married the love of his life, JoAnne Renbarger at the Buchanan United Methodist Church parsonage while he was on leave from Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Following his army retirement, Norm worked 20 years for the United States Postal Service in Niles as a mail carrier before his second and final retirement.

Norm enjoyed golfing, fishing, mushroom hunting, bowling, and playing ball. He was an avid horseracing fan, following “The Sport of Kings” as a lifelong handicapper and competed in many Las Vegas tournaments. Norm was a worthy opponent in cribbage, pinochle and poker. He loved music with an eclectic taste - classic country western, bluegrass, big band, barbershop, traditional hymns and the standards singers of the 1940’s. He kept a file folder of humorous writings, limericks, and jokes – he appreciated clever wordplay. Known to be a bit stubborn and outspoken, he gained the nickname “Stormin’ Norman.” Most importantly, he was honest to a fault, dependable, loyal and a good friend to have. He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Norm is survived by his loving wife of 76 years, JoAnne; daughters, Marcia Lynne (Jerry) Grant of Lewisville, TX; Sharon (Gaylord) Miller of Harrison Township, MI; and Dawn Marsden of Niles, MI; grandchildren, Khris (Carrie) Lord, Brian (Melissa) Lord, Ryan (Christi) Miller, and Kelly (Brian) Murakami; and great-grandchildren, Tyler, Dylan and Alexis Murakami, Quinn Miller, and Brycen and Caleb Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Lisle; and brothers, Lewis and Jack.
