Norma's Obituary

Norma Jean Wolkins, 95, of Galien, passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at Brentwood Senior Living, Niles.

Visitation will be held from 11-noon on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at Swem Chapel, 301 W. Front St., Buchanan. A funeral procession will follow the visitation to Galien Cemetery for a celebration of life graveside service. Memorial contributions in Norma’s name may be made to First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, 925 Chippewa St., Buchanan. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.swemchapel.com.

Norma was born on January 20, 1929, to Wilbur and Lodema (Hess) Wolkins in Galien. She graduated from Galien High School. Immediately following graduation, Norma began her professional journey at Union State Bank in Galien. Over her remarkable 40-year career, she witnessed and adapted to many changes as the bank transitioned through ICB, Chemical and Huntington. Norma served as the Assistant Branch Manager since 1979 and was a beloved fixture for the community at the bank.

A talented pianist from an early age, Norma showcased her gifts in school recitals and her church, where she also played the organ. She was an active member at Hills Corners Bible Baptist Church, serving as treasurer and playing at both the Sunday and Wednesday service for many, many years. Later in life, Norma joined First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Buchanan.

Known for her determination and admirable work ethic, Norma overcame adversity with grace. A strong work ethic was important to her, and a value she instilled in her son and grandchildren. Through her hard work, Norma had her home built in Galien, where she raised her son and lived for nearly 60 years. A devoted mother and grandmother, her most cherished moments were spent with family.

Norma is survived by her grandchildren, Richard Chapman, Brenda (Archie) Arnold, Debra (Craig) Miller and great-great-grandchildren, Brittany Chapman, Tiffany Arnold, Stephany Arnold, Hayden Miller and Emma Miller. She was preceded in death by her son, Dennis Wolkins.
