Morrie's Obituary

Maurice James “Morrie” VanDenBerg, 87, of Sodus, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at The Willows Assisted Living, St. Joseph.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 4701 Naomi Rd., Sodus, MI 49126. A gathering time with the family will take place one hour prior, from 10-11 also at the church. Memorial contributions in Morrie’s name may be made to PACE of Southwest Michigan, St. Joseph or Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, Sodus. Inurnment will take place at later date in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Sodus. Arrangements have been entrusted to Heritage Chapel, Berrien Springs. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.heritage-chapel.com.

Morrie was born on August 5, 1937, to John and Henrietta (VanPutten) VanDenBerg in Byron Center, MI. He graduated from Byron Center High School. Professionally, Morrie primarily worked as a Brick Mason, retiring from MCI Construction in Lancaster, SC after many years of service. His professional journey also included owning a locksmith business and driving semi, even owning one for some time.

Morrie was a jack of all trades and even instrumentally gifted, playing the accordion. He and his three brothers played together in a polka band for many years, The VanDenBerg Brothers. They played many events including school functions, churches, jails, hospitals, dances, wedding receptions and Oktoberfest’s.

On June 27, 1981, he married Helen Ada (Froehlich) in Byron Center, MI. They loved camping and attended Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.

Morrie is survived by his wife of 43 years, Helen VanDenBerg; children, Dennis VanDenBerg, Robert (Anna) VanDenBerg, Duane Carlson and Terry (Julie) Carlson; grandchildren, Peter VanDenBerg, Cameron VanDenBerg, Austin (Taylor) Carlson, Colleen Carlson, Micayla Carlson, Devon Carlson and great-granddaughter, Tessa Carlson. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Henrietta VanDenBerg; infant son, Mark VanDenBerg; brothers, John, Jay and Jerry VanDenBerg and stepdaughter, Tricia Carlson.
