Lori's Obituary

Lori Lynn Baber, 63, of Buchanan, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at home.

A celebration of life service will be held at noon on Monday, October 7, 2024, at Swem Chapel, 301 W. Front St., Buchanan. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery Buchanan. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service, from 11-noon. Please feel free to wear purple if possible, as that was Lori’s favorite color. Memorial contributions may be made to Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation or the Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.swemchapel.com.

Lori was born on January 14, 1961, to Lyman Orville Thomas, Jr. and Doris Fetterhoff (Bunton) in Buchanan. She attended Galien High School and continued her education through Southwestern Michigan College. On October 28, 2006, she married Nelson Baber in a fairy-tale ceremony in Buchanan Christian Church.

Professionally, Lori devoted many years to social work, serving at organizations such as Gateway, Michigan Works, Area Agency on Aging and the Salvation Army to name a few. She was deeply passionate about her work and helping others, forming many lifelong friendships due to her genuine compassion.

Lori was an avid reader, amassing an impressive collection of books that became her personal library. She also enjoyed nurturing her flower gardens and enjoying time poolside at her home. A dedicated fan of Notre Dame and NASCAR, Lori had a special affection for her pets, and above all, her family. A proud mother, she always put family first and her most cherished moments were spent with them.

Lori is survived by her husband, Nelson Baber of Buchanan; children, Bill (Jill) Baber of Niles, Nelson (Deb) Baber, Jr., of Avon, IN, Misty (Michael) Vaughn of Niles and Cody (Bryan Phillips) Thomas of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren, Brooke Baber, Nolan Baber, Nora Baber, James Vaughn, Tucker Vaughn and Braylee Vaughn; siblings, Helen (David) Kimbrell, Sharyl (Todd) Freehling, Orville (Sheila) Thomas III and Art Fetterhoff; brother-in-law, Floyd Rose; aunt, Phyllis (Steve) Hyer, many beloved nieces, nephews; dogs, Jazzy, Cheyenne, Irish and cats, Goldie and Ebony. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Cole Vaughn and sister, Linda Rose.
