Larry's Obituary
Larry Henry Vandenberg, 84, life-long resident of Decatur, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 19, 2024 in Decatur. He was born May 9, 1940 in Decatur to Henry and Blanche (Fouts) Vandenberg.
Larry was known as a hard-working, family man. At 84 years old, he was still doing what he enjoyed, delivering papers to the community. Prior to being a self-employed delivery man, he dedicated his time to Du-Wel Metals in Hartford, leaving only after they closed their doors. In his younger years, he was an avid bowler and his daughters remember summers spent exclusively at the campground. Later in life, family became the most important thing for Larry, especially spending time with his only grandson, who often joined him on many deliveries. He was never one to miss a Detroit Tigers game, and was a life-long Lions fan.
Larry will be missed by his daughters, Sally Vandenberg, and Carol Vandenberg; his grandson, Jacobe Vandenberg; his brother-in-law, Dave Scott; his brother-in-law, Troy (Barb) Jones; his sister-in-law, Mary (Ruben) Morales; his dog, Oreo; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Leona (Jones) Vandenberg; his sisters, Ardith Kay Scott, and Betty Lou Vandenberg; and his parents.
Services will be held privately. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, www.stjude.org.
