He married Laurel Miller on April 5, 1974. After high school he enlisted in the US Army and served three years at Fort Bragg, North Carolina as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, was a member of the army basketball team, and later a heavy equipment operator. After his military service John attended Southwestern Michigan College and graduated with an associate’s degree in computer programming. He then attended Ferris State College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in computer science/Systems Design. Upon graduation he was hired into Marathon Oil Co in Findlay, Ohio and worked twenty-six years as a programmer and senior lead analyst. John was actively involved in the YMCA and enjoyed many days playing basketball on his lunch hour. After hours John renovated rental properties and later built a new home in Arlington, Ohio.
