John's Obituary

John William Basinger, 85, of New Buffalo, MI, passed away in his home on Wednesday – January 29, 2025. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sommerfeld Chapel – 15 N. Barton St., New Buffalo, MI.
John was born on May 29, 1939 in Enfield, IL, to the late William and Nora (Biggerstaff) Basinger.

On October 8, 1960, at St. Mary of the Lake Church here in New Buffalo he married Shirley Ann Salat.

John was a loving husband, father, and friend. John belonged to the Plumbers & Pipefitters Union Local 357 and owned and operated J. B. Industrial Services where he rebuilt screw pumps and did fabrication. John enjoyed his family most, taking care of his lawn and gardens. John loved having conversations and always stopped what he was doing to help if needed.

John is survived by his children – sons Daniel Basinger of New Buffalo, MI, Anthony (Nancy) Basinger of LaPorte, IN, Mark (Trish) Basinger of LaPorte, IN; and daughters – Julie Schavey of Chesterton, IN and Tammy (Greg) Hutcheson of Grand Haven, MI; grandchildren – Brad, Ashley, Casey, Samantha, Brenna, Spencer, Jacob, Ryan, Holly and Delaney; 22 great grandchildren; and sisters – Clara, Eddie and Catherine. He is preceded in death by his wife – Shirley, brothers – Robert, Joseph and Charles, and sisters – Helen, Mary Lou and Betty.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday – February 4, 11:00am, at St. Mary of the Lake Church – 718 W. Buffalo St., New Buffalo. Burial follows at Pine Grove Cemetery – New Buffalo. Visitation with the family is on Monday – February 3, from 4:00-7:00pm, at Sommerfeld Chapel.
