Jean's Obituary

Jean Mae Lydia Koebel, 104, of St. Joseph, MI passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at Pine Ridge Nursing Center in Stevensville.

Jean was born February 19, 1920 in St. Joseph, MI to William & Anna (Humburg) Schuett. As a child, she enjoyed playing hopscotch, baseball, hide and seek, swimming in lake Michigan and picking berries for farmers to make a little spending money. During her high school summers, Jean worked for Gillespie’s Drug Store as a Soda Jerk. Upon her graduation in 1937, she got a bookkeeping job at Kasischke Store. It was during this time, her brother introduced her to Mike Koebel, whom she married August 27, 1939 at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in St. Joseph. A year later, Mike and Jean were blessed with a son, Michael Koebel on October 1, 1940. Five years later, a little girl, Patricia Ann was born on January 27, 1945 and on January 3rd, 1958, they were blessed with another son, Ronald Koebel.

Jean enjoyed listening to music, especially Polka and the Statler Brothers and loved to go dancing at Shadowland Pavilion on Silver Beach. She belonged to the Tri-Unit /Royalton Township Fire Auxiliary for 20 years, as well as the Berrien County Sheriff Posse Ladies Auxiliary. She also worked for Royalton Township for many years as an Election Inspector and took care of reservations for the Township Park. Jean was known for her love of poetry, which led her to write many beautiful words that came to her mind. She was blessed with a lovely family with whom she enjoyed going on camping trips, birthday parties and Christmas get-togethers with.

Jean is survived by her children Ronald (Stephanie) Koebel, Michael (Dixie) Koebel and Patricia (William) Gross; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, husband Michael in June of 2001 and siblings, Henrietta Elgas, Carl Schuett and Bernadine Johan.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 19, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 9123 George Ave., Berrien Springs, MI 49103 with Rev. Dr. James Wright officiating. Inurnment will follow at Spring Run Cemetery in St. Joseph. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., Friday, October 18, 2024 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel and Cremation Service, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church Berrien Springs or the Royalton Township Fire Department / Scottdale Volunteers.
