Jean's Obituary

Jean A. DeVries entered her Heavenly home on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

Jean was born on July 15, 1928 to Bernard and Dorothy Nichol. She married her handsome Marine, Ralph DeVries, on April 24, 1947. They enjoyed 55 years of marriage before his passing.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Elaine Schmidt, great grandson Ryan Langley, husband Ralph, grandson Michael Strefling, son-in-law Dennis Mallon, and granddaughter Anne Porter.

She is survived by her children: Mary (Jeff) Porter, Ralph (Sally) DeVries, Dorothy (Neil) Strefling, Hilda (Doug) Montey, Kathy Mallon & honorary daughter, Karen Belmont. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Chris (Karla) Porter, Adam (Amber) DeVries, Neil Strefling, Jr., David (Patricia) Muellen, Elizabeth (Daniel) Ruple, Sara (Greg) Plavidal, Jennifer (Kit) Swenby, and Ellie Mallon. She was blessed with 10 great grandchildren: Alex (Gabby) Porter, Karissa (Cade) Stephenson, Andrew DeVries, Adelle & Harper Ruple, Edward & Sydney Plavidal, and Samantha, Lucas & Addison Swenby. Jean is also survived by many nieces & nephews.

Jean loved her family, enjoying many special events, especially Thanksgiving meals and pontoon rides on Thunder Lake! She enjoyed wintering on Dauphin Island, Alabama for many years.

She also loved the Detroit Tigers, cheering when they won and turning off the TV in disgust when they weren’t doing so well! She was an accomplished seamstress making 2 wedding dresses and countless bridesmaid dresses for her daughters’ weddings. She also enjoyed quilting and knitting as well as many other handmade projects which she gifted to her family. In later years she was an avid Hallmark Channel fan and could recite the dialogue along with the actors!

Services will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Heritage Chapel, 8747 Old 31, Berrien Springs, MI 49103 with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m., interment to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
