Janet's Obituary

Janet Maureen Spicer, 92, passed away peacefully at the Willows in St. Joseph, Michigan, on October 10, 2024.

Janet was born on August 22, 1932, in Ashland, Kentucky, to J. Sanford and Emma (Wheeler) Damron. She graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a degree in secondary English education and met her husband of 62 years, Robert (Bob) Spicer, while there. The two of them dedicated their lives to public education, with Janet teaching for over 30 years in Kentucky or Ohio. She was a life-long learner, avid reader and could engage anyone she met in delightful conversation.

Janet lived her life fully with an impeccable style. She enjoyed staying busy and involved herself in various cultural societies, artisan guilds, Mahjong leagues, needlepoint groups and as a member of Fairplain Presbyterian Church. Janet also loved to travel. After retirement, Janet and Bob explored all 48 contiguous states, as well as Great Britain, France, and Germany. They spent many of their later years residing on Jekyll Island, Georgia, where they truly embraced Southern hospitality and the coastal beauty of the Golden Isles. Their final move to Southwest Michigan, offered them the opportunity to watch their great-grandsons grow up, which Janet considered her most cherished blessing.

Janet is survived by her loving daughter, Jani Spicer Thomas of Clyde, OH; granddaughter, Amy (Michael) Dirlam of St. Joseph, MI; grandson, Robert Mattey Spicer of Columbus, OH; and great-grandsons, Mason and Cameron Dirlam. She was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband, Robert A. Spicer, Sr. and son, Robert A. Spicer, Jr.

A celebration of Janet’s life will be held on Friday, November 1, 2024, at The Heritage Chapel in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Family and friends are invited to visit from 1:00-2:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held immediately afterward. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Janet's memory may be made to the St. Joseph-Lincoln Senior Center. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.heritage-chapel.com.
