James's Obituary
James Allen Waldschmidt Jr., 44, of Dowagiac, passed away at home on Monday, December 23, 2024.
James was born on October 17, 1980, in Niles, MI. James, known as “Jimmy” by close family, will be remembered for his infectious laughter, big smile with dimples, bear hugs, and quick wit. James could take over a room with his laughter and smile. He was the beloved son of James Waldschmidt Sr. and Diann VonWanko, and cherished brother of Mandy Waldschmidt, all of Hurst, TX.
James was a 2000 graduate of Dowagiac Union High School, and in 2019 he proved to be “the brains of the family” when he graduated valedictorian with his IT certification. James spent the last several years in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas.
James loved to spend time with his large family and his “ride or die” dog, Gwen. He was an excellent conversationalist who was able to talk to anyone in any setting. As an avid reader, James was also known for his endless amounts of “useless” trivia knowledge. James was adored by kids, who seemed to be drawn to him as the “gentle giant” he was to everyone. He was lovingly called “cousin Jimmy” by the younger children in the family, many of whom will remember him well by his plentiful and contagious catch phrases.
Throughout James’ life, he continuously took care of and looked out for others. He was the number one supporter of every family member’s fundraisers, sporting events, business ventures, or other endeavors. He loved deeply and fully; and took time to really get to know the people in his life. His various hobbies and interests included computers, gaming, reading, trying new foods, and giving people a hard time. James looked forward to Tuesdays when he was often found playing cards with his grandfather.
After many years of battling health conditions, James’ health continued to decline and he wanted to move back home to Michigan to spend time with his extended family. After his father’s birthday celebration, James made the move in September 2024. Despite the move and subsequent distance, James was very excited for the birth of his first nephew, and already had plans for a return road trip to Texas to meet him.
James is survived, dearly loved, and greatly missed by his father, James Sr.; his mother, Diann; his sister, Mandy Waldschmidt (Luke Samples); his grandfather, Robert “Bob” Hayes; along with numerous aunts, uncles, and too many cousins to count, even though he knew and loved every one of them.
James was preceded in death by his grandparents, Benjamin and Thelma Waldschmidt; and Judy Hayes.
Visitation will be held Saturday, December 28, 2024, from 1 to 4pm at Clark Chapel, 405 Center St., Dowagiac. In keeping with James’s endless generosity, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Southwest Michigan, www.humanesocietyswm.org or to A.C.T.I.O.N Ministries, www.actiondowagiac.org.
