Howard's Obituary
Howard Roland Doughten, 94, Buchanan, Michigan passed peacefully to heaven on November 3, 2021.
Howard was born on November 14, 1926 to Ward and Golda (Potter) Doughten. Howard is survived by his beloved wife of 74 years, Elsie; son Bruce Doughten and daughter Renea (Howard) Brunke; grandchildren Kaleb Doughten-Priuska, Ryan (Julie) Dickey, and Eric Dickey; great-grandson Zachary Dickey; sibling Emma (Max) Morley and many nieces and nephews. He Preceded in death by his parents Ward (Golda) Doughten and siblings: Everett (Louise) Doughten, Margaret (Floyd) Renbarger.
Howard graduated from Galien High School in 1945. Immediately following graduation he served in United States Army stationed in Korea, rank PFC. Upon returning home, he married the love of his life, Elsie Schantz, in 1947 and they raised their two children on the Dad and Lad Farms in Buchanan.
In addition to his love of farming, he worked at Studebaker's, Clark Equipment, and the United States Post Office in Buchanan. Using the GI Bill, Howard completed agricultural business classes through Michigan State University and has always been an avid Michigan State fan. He was named Conservation Farmer of the Year in 2003. Howard served as Secretary for the Galien School Board from 1967 - 1969. He was a member of the Galien American Legion Auxiliary Unit 344.
A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands put to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best. He left us peacefully with family by his side and a memory we are proud to own. So treasure him Lord, in your garden of rest, for when on earth he was the best.
Due to Covid-19 pandemic, a private service will take place for the immediate family at the Mission Hills Memorial Chapel in Niles, Michigan. Military honors will be provided by the Buchanan American Legion. Arrangements have been entrusted with Swem Chapel in Buchanan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Portage Prairie United Methodist Church, 2450 Orange Road, Niles, MI 49120 or St. Jude Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN.
