Grover Cleveland's Obituary

Grover Cleveland “G.C.” Gibson, Jr., 97, of Lacota, met his Savior in Heaven on April 7, 2025. Grover was born May 25, 1927 in Des Ark, Arkansas to Grover and Mary “Molly” (Douglas) Gibson. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1945 and served until 1947. PFC Gibson was assigned to the 301st Signal Operating Battalion in Nuremberg, Germany. While there, he was an Antitank Gun Crewman, guarding the homes of American judges presiding over the war crimes trials. After returning from Germany, he married the love of his life, Lois Newell, on August 25, 1947 and moved to Kalamazoo, before settling in Lacota, MI to raise their family. He worked for several years on the Byrd family blueberry farm, doing odd jobs throughout the year. He later went to work at Pullman Industries, where he was a foreman until his retirement in 1988.

He was a jack of all trades after his retirement and was constantly busy. He never said no when someone needed help and spent more money than he made fixing lawn mowers for all of his friends. Grover loved to tinker and always had a new project started in the basement. He enjoyed going to flea markets, buying and selling junk and looking for a bargain. Grover was a proud member of the VFW Post #6134 in Pullman, MI and was honored to be the Grand Marshall in the Memorial Day parades. Most importantly, Grover wanted nothing more than to be surrounded by and relish in the happiness of the ones he loved.

To know Grover was to love him, and he will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Grover was preceded in death, along with his parents, by his beloved wife of 70 years, Lois, in 2018; brothers L.B. Hambright, Frank Hambright, Bill Hambright, Richard “Gene” Hambright, and Wesley Gibson; sisters Gladys Ellis and Marie Hoag; one grandson - Timothy Michael Chumley; and several nieces and nephews.

Grover is survived by his children: Mary (Dennis) Brown of Hempstead, Texas, Butch (Kay) Gibson of South Haven, and Robin Gibson (Jeff Barnes) of Grand Junction; granddaughters Tina Chumley, Barbara Dewveall, and Araya Stillson; five great-grandchildren, including his most cherished treasures, Kennedy and Kody Stillson; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take place on Saturday April 12, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Filbrandt Chapel 1076 S. Bailey Ave, South Haven Michigan 49090. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Rick Jones officiating. Grover will then be laid to rest in Chambers Cemetery in Geneva Township with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Grover’s memory to VFW Post #6134, P.O. Box 254, Pullman, MI 49450 or Careline Hospice, 801 Rose Hill Rd., Jackson, MI 49202.
