Fred's Obituary

Frederick (Fred) Landon Cooley, 74, of Bloomingdale, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. Born in Allegan, Michigan, on May 2, 1950, he was the son of Emerson and Frances Cooley. Fred married Jakie First on October 7, 1978.

Fred leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Jakie; his daughter, Kendra (Brian) Burrows; his son Kirk (Nichole) Cooley; and three grandchildren, Harper and Drew Burrows, Maxwell Cooley and a fourth grandchild Baby Boy Cooley due in July. He is also survived by his brother Duane Cooley and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Homer Cooley.

Fred graduated from Bloomindale High School and then met Jakie through mutual friends where she instantly fell in love with Fred’s laugh. The two of them married and settled down on the farm where they raised their two children. Fred worked as the maintenance and groundskeeper of Bloomingdale Public Schools for over 30 years. Aside from making his coworkers laugh with his great humor and quick wit, one of Fred’s favorite responsibilities was preparing the ball fields for his kids’ games. Throughout his life, Fred’s greatest passion was farming-spending time outside on his tractor, raising Hereford cows, and working the fields. It wasn’t uncommon to see one of his Airedales by his side. His favorite people “the grandkids” called him “Bumpa”. Harper’s greatest memory is of seeing him with his Airedales trapping woodchucks. Drew’s fondest memory is Bumpa’s snack rule; where there is no rule and they could eat whatever snack they wanted, whenever. Family meant the most to Fred; watching his kids play sports, he never missed a game, then along came his grandkids and he continued watching their games too. Fred was a private man, but his presence and love of his family were strongly felt and will be deeply missed.

A Celebration of life will be held on March 12, 2025, at Journey Family Church, 514 W. Van Buren St, Gobles Michigan, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pastor Gary Napp will officiate. A luncheon with a sharing of memories will take place from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m.
