Gene's Obituary
Floyd E. Lockamy Jr., 82, lovingly known as "Gene" passed away after a brief illness on January 21st, 2024.
Dad was the oldest of 6 children and born October 6th, 1941 in Maynard, Arkansas to Floyd & Dixie Lockamy. Although, if you asked Grandma he was born on October 7th, 1941 - the doctor was tipsy at the time and wrote the wrong day.
Dad was made of cigarettes, diet mountain dew, and extra salt. He would have his water with his coffee and he loved his sweets. He was also very proud to say that since 1983 he was completely sober!
Dad was a supportive and loving father. When he spoke, we listened; whether that was for encouragement or scolding - we respected his opinion! We always referred to Dad as a stubborn man and very ornery, but he had the kindest and gentlest soul. He was always willing to lend a listening ear, a helping hand, and just "be there" for us. Dad was always our biggest fan! He was a devoted Grandfather to his 5 grandchildren, they were the lights of his life. He hardly ever missed a sporting event, school function, or an opportunity to cheer them on. He loved his siblings and very rarely, if ever, missed a family gathering. The best memories were when we were all together for our Sunday dinners and Holidays at Grandmas. Dad was a very simple man, he didn't need material things to make him happy. He enjoyed westerns, collecting eagle memorabilia, fishing, and being with his family.
He often spoke of his time down home in Arkansas where he lived as a child while Grandpa Floyd was in the Navy. He would help his Grandpa pick corn by hand until they bled. When Grandpa Floyd got out of the Navy, he came to Michigan to find a job and the family joined him not too long after.
Even though Dad only had an 11th grade education, he was a leader and a hard worker! He spent many years at Clark Equipment in Buchanan, MI where he was a welder and later worked at United Store Fixtures in Niles, MI. Dad was also a Veteran having honorably served 4 years in the United States Marine Corp.
In 1971 he married the love of his life "Peggy" and together they had 2 boys, Eric and Jason. Together they also lovingly raised his only daughter Gena.
Dad was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Johney & Kenny and sisters Pat & Barb. Each death took a piece of our heart with them and changed our family drastically! Dad is survived by his last sibling Bobby.
Also surviving are his children Gena (Brian) Welsh, Eric Lockamy, and Jason (Heather) Lockamy. His grandchildren and shining stars Ily, Dustin, Justin, Dylan and Caden. Also, many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly and meant the world to him. It was never good bye for Dad - it was always "See ya"!
Dad thank you for your presence through thick and thin; you were more than a parent, you were our wonderful friend.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Swem Chapel, Buchanan. Cremation has taken place. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.swemchapel.com.
