Felipe's Obituary

Felipe Barela Figuracion M.D., 94, of South Haven, Michigan passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family, on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Felipe was born December 18, 1929 in Nabua, Camarines Sur, Philippines to Gavino and Marciana Figuracion.

He married Nenita Co on February 1, 1961, in Harlan, Kentucky, and they enjoyed nearly 63 years of marriage. Felipe graduated from Manila Central University College of Medicine in 1956 and immigrated to the United States in July 1957, sponsored by Walter Memorial Hospital to specialize in general surgery. In 1964 he moved to Canada with the family to specialize in cardiovascular anesthesia at the University of Manitoba. In 1968, Felipe moved to Michigan and held roles in providing general anesthesia in Lapeer, Battle Creek, and South Haven hospitals.

In 1976, he helped start the Anesthesia team in support of Open Heart Surgery at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan where he continued to work as a cardiovascular anesthesiologist until his retirement in 1992. Felipe and his family loved South Haven, and he willfully made a daily round trip trek to Borgess Hospital, allowing his family to be raised in South Haven. During his retirement he enjoyed reading, traveling and University of Michigan football and basketball. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren and visits from family and friends. He was a patriot of the United States, the country he loved.

Felipe is preceded in death by his parents and three older brothers, Gregorio, Raymundo, and Luis. He is survived by his wife, Nenita, and their children; Angeli (Brent) Certa, South Haven, MI, Philip (Halyna) Figuracion, Montclair, NJ, and Rosali (Kip) Richards, Saline, MI. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Kara (Donald) Roman, Shawna Mulvihill, Adam (Kate) Mulvihill Figuracion, Alexander Figuracion, Nicholas Figuracion and Gabriella Richards and one great-granddaughter, Marcy Roman and many nieces and nephews.

The family wish to thank the staff of Corewell Health Palliative and End-of-Life Care for their support.
