Eugene R. “Gene” Layman, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at Woodland Terrace at Longmeadow, Niles.
A private celebration of life will be held. Burial will take place in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Buchanan. Arrangements have been entrusted to Swem Chapel, Buchanan. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.swemchapel.com.
Gene was born on June 27, 1928, in Terre Haute, IN. He attended Buchanan High School and enlisted in the United States Army in 1946. While in the Army, Gene attained the rank of Corporal and operated as an investigator for the military police. Professionally, he worked at Electro-Voice, retiring after 40 years of service. On August 15, 1952, he married Theresa J. Huebner. Gene also enjoyed farming, gardening, flea markets, gun shows and traveling with his wife, Theresa, even driving to Alaska for one trip.
Gene is survived by his daughters, Bonnie Dice, Sherry (Joe) Bumgardner and Debbie (Scott) Burks; grandchildren, John (Christy) Dice, Jr., Tracie Dice, Jason (Hope) Burks, Mackenzie (Spencer) Mroczek and Tyler (Amanda) Burks; great-grandchildren, Cody Dice, Travis (Shelby) Dice, Daxson Burks, Effie Burks, Lachlan Burks, Brielle Mroczek, Lilliana Mroczek, Kaladin Mroczek, Finnic Burks, Annalise Burks and great-great-grandson, Theo Dice. Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Theresa Layman; son, David Daniel Rotzein, Jr. and son-in-law, John “Jack” Dice.
