Charlie's Obituary


It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles "Charlie" Basinger. Charlie, as he was affectionately known, left us on July 27, 2023. He was born on January 4, 1942, and through his 81 years of life, Charlie touched countless lives with his humor, love, and dedication to family and work.
Charlie will forever be missed by his loving wife, Betty Rubenacker, whom he married in 1961. Their bond was a testament to true love and they were an inspiration to all who knew them. His loss will deeply be felt by his cherished children, his daughters Denise (Art) Lueck and Connie (Kevin) Borglin, and his son Tom (Marcia) Basinger.
Charlie's legacy will continue to live on through his grandchildren, AJ Lueck, Tanya VanDillen, Kelly Nelson, Haley Basinger and Amy Basinger along with great grandson Sammy VanDillen who all adored their grandfather/great grandfather and were fortunate to have him as a guiding force in their lives.
He is also survived by his loving sisters, Catherine, Eydie, Clara and his brother John. His memory will be cherished by those who knew him, including numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and long-time friends.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, William and Nora Basinger, who instilled in him the values that he carried throughout his life. He was also preceded in death by his sisters Betty, Mary (Lou) and Helen along with his brothers Bob and Joe.
Known as a funny and loving individual, Charlie's personality never failed to light up a room. His years of dedication as a union electrician at IBEW Local 153 and as an electrical inspector for various municipalities in southwest Michigan are a testament to his commitment and hard work.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, July 31, at 11:00am, at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in New Buffalo with Fathers Basker Lopez and Ed Cronin officiating. Visitation with the family is on Sunday July 30, from 3:00-6:00pm at the Sommerfeld Chapel – 15 N. Barton St., New Buffalo, MI.
