Betty's Obituary
Betty Jane Toush was born in rural southwestern Michigan on the 24th of July in 1931. Her parents, Russell Toush and Albertina “Bert” (Wyman) Toush were blessed with their only child on that day. She was quite the prodigy as a youth, attending a small two-room School House in Buchanan. When one of the teachers was out sick while Betty was in the fifth grade, she was given the responsibility of teaching the kindergarten through second grade students while the other teacher taught third grade through sixth grade. This seemed to set her on a course of responsibility leading her to her being the accountant and Manager of her father’s trucking business while she was a teenager. Betty graduated from high school with many offers for full ride scholarships to universities, but she decided to stay in her hometown and became an editor at the Herald Press Newspaper in Saint Joseph, Michigan. She later worked in, and then ran the Parts Department at Heath Co. for many years from which she retired.
Betty stayed busy in numerous activities including the American Legion and the Red Hat Society. She was an avid and legendary bowler in the Twin Cities area, as well as a legendary and very accomplished golfer well into her 80s.
Betty married Jerry Spitzer in 1952 and had two children with him, later becoming married again to Eugene Forray, from which they did not have any children. She had a long-time relationship after that with Benton Harbor’s, Paul Orlando with whom she shared 25 years of many trips to the dance floor. After his passing she moved back to her home and then ultimately to The Willows where she passed away peacefully in the middle of the night at the age of 93.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Kathy. She is survived by her son, Mark Spitzer. Betty was quite the personality, and a valued friend to those who knew her well. I think it could be said fairly that she had a very full life.
A funeral service will take place at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, MI 49085 on Tuesday, January 14 at 1:00 pm. Please feel free to visit Betty’s online guestbook at www.starks-menchinger.com.
