Betty's Obituary
A proud graduate of Covert Public Schools in 1948, Betty attended Western Michigan University, where she co-founded the Delta Upsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in 1953. After earning her degree, she devoted over 30 years to shaping the lives of elementary students. Betty’s classroom was one of structure, respect, and high expectations, where her firm yet gentle approach to discipline demonstrated her deep commitment to her students’ success. Whether pulling a student’s ear to guide them or setting firm boundaries, Betty’s quiet but steady support left a lasting impact on everyone she taught.
Betty later earned a Master of Arts in Reading Education, becoming a Reading Specialist who not only helped struggling readers but also mentored new teachers. A woman of service, Betty’s dedication extended far beyond the classroom. She was a faithful member of Covert Congregational Church, where she taught Sunday School, and served in several leadership roles, including Chapter President, in the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Her contributions were felt throughout her community, whether as a cheerleading coach, a Boy Scout Den Mother, or a Covert Booster.
A lover of the Arts, after retiring Betty became a beloved storyteller at Covert Elementary and the Covert Library, captivating children with her distinctive style. Known for her sharp, clear, and melodic whistle, Betty could be heard throughout her home, a sound that became a comforting signature of her presence. She was also a gifted cook and baker, renowned for her birthday cakes and cobblers, and a talented seamstress, creating everything from prom dresses to Halloween costumes. Through each meal prepared, every laugh shared, and every stitch sewn, Betty showed her love and care for those around her.
Betty was predeceased by her husband, Maurice. She is survived by her children: A. Craig Colombel of Seattle, WA; Keith Andre Colombel Sr. of South Haven, MI; and Allison Colombel of Washington, DC. Her grandchildren, including Keittra Casimir (Christian), Kamille Barajas (Luis), Kyla Colombel, Keith Andre Colombel, Jr., Shanona Nichols, and Noelle McDougle, along with 13 great-grandchildren, will carry forward her legacy of strength, discipline, and love.
A memorial service will be held at Lily of the Valley Church on November 22, 2024. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the service at 12:00 p.m. Pastor Darryl Williams will officiate.
Betty Colombel leaves behind a legacy marked by unwavering dedication, strength, and a quiet love woven into every action. Through her discipline, laughter, and countless acts of service, she touched the hearts of all who knew her. Her memory will forever live on in the many lives she touched.
