Ching's Obituary

Asuncion “Ching” Javier Mendoza, 91, of Berrien Center, MI, passed away on Wednesday – October 16, 2024, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel – 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, MI.

Ching was born on August 15, 1933 in Agoo, La Union, Philippines, to the late Dr. Dominador and Sofia (Aguilar) Javier.

Ching was a Benton Harbor Junior High School teacher and coached most middle school sports. She enjoyed knitting, dancing, singing and playing the piano. Ching’s love for her children and grandchildren was her passion in life.

Ching is survived by her four children – Joie (Steve) Nitz of Berrien Center, Augusto (Tamra) Mendoza of Eau Claire, Rene’ Mendoza of Kalamazoo and Frances (Michael) Roden of Stevensville; 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; brother – Dr. Rafael (Mary) Javier of Lansing, MI; and sister – Chita (Joseph) Concepcion of Philippines. She is preceded in death by her husband – Wenceslao ; daughter – Maria Victoria; brothers – Victor Javier and Melecio Javier; and sisters – Edna Villacorte and Lourdes Villar.

Visitation with the family is on Thursday – October 24 from 5:00-7:00pm at the Starks & Menchinger Chapel in St. Joseph. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday – October 25 at St. Bernard Catholic Church – 555 Delaware St., Benton Harbor, MI, with Father John Peter Ambrose officiating. Burial follows at Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph. Memorial contributions may be made to either St. Bernard Catholic Church or to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
