Arvilla "Sue"'s Obituary
Arvilla “Sue” (Alexis) Wood, age 84, passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 29, 1941, to Mark John and Theresa (Jackson) Alexis in Hartford, Michigan.
A Celebration of Life Service for Sue will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 555 E. Delaware Ave, in Benton Harbor with Fr. John Peter Ambrose presiding. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph. Friends may visit from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Monday, April 28, 2025, at Starks and Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Service, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. For a more lasting memory, donations in Sue’s name can be made out to the Humane Society of Southwest Michigan.
Sue worked for Heath/Zenith for over 30 years, although her children will most fondly remember her early job at the Candy Counter at Sears when they were small. Sue enjoyed bowling and golfing, and belonged to several leagues in local area. One of her greatest pleasures was watching her grandsons play football for St. Joseph High School; she and her sister Barbara never missed game. She also enjoyed travel. She and Barb took several cruises (Hawaii and Caribbean). Once they became tribal elders, they also took many scenic bus trips with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians. They even appeared in the crowd outside of the Today Show representing the Tribal Elders. Sue and Barb also traveled to Europe, and visited Germany, France, and Italy. Sue will be remembered as fun, generous, and outgoing. She would do anything to help and protect those she loved.
Sue is survived by her loving children, Brenda (Wood) Lyons, Tom Wood, Jr., and Kathryn (Wood) Powers; many grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Philip Alexis Sr., Barbara (Alexis) Karstens, and Margaret (Alexis) Brunell; and daughter Susan (Wood) Kole.
