Andrene's Obituary
Andrene Pernilla Heathcote, known to all her loved ones as Andy, 98, of Dowagiac, passed away peacefully at her home on Indian Lake on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
Andrene was born on December 15, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the late Carl and Anna Granquist. She married her husband James (Jim) Heathcote on August 30, 1947, and they had two sons, Daniel and Robert. Andrene attended the University of Chicago to earn her Bachelor of Philosophy and then graduated from Michigan State University with her Masters of Teacher of Mathematics. She was employed by Lakeshore Public Schools from 1964 to 1986 where she taught 7th and 8th grade math.
After retirement Andrene went on to travel throughout the world with her husband and friends. Some highlights of her travel included visiting Kenya, England and California. She settled into her home on Indian Lake in 1991 where she spent time with friends and family including all her grandchildren who throughout the years loved to visit Grandma/Oma at the lake. Even into her 90’s, Andrene was still in the kitchen making her delicious homemade turkey gravy for Thanksgiving dinners and setting out her special holiday dishes. She enjoyed spending time on the porch in the warmer months reading a good book, looking out at the lake and spending time catching up with neighbors, friends and loved ones.
Andrene lived a full life of love and purpose and was also a longtime member of the Silver Creek United Methodist Church where she at one time served as Secretary and a Board Chairman along with volunteering countless hours.
Surviving are her two sons - Daniel Heathcote and Robert (Kam) Heathcote; six grandchildren – Denielle (Bryan) Smith, Aaron Heathcote, Devon Heathcote, Drew Heathcote, Carly (Jana) Heathcote and Erica Heathcote; and great-grandchild, A. Smith. She is also survived by good friends Sally Ernst, Barb DeWolf, Kathy Elghammer, along with other dear friends and extended family.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 50 years - James Heathcote, who passed on September 9, 1997.
Honoring her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service to celebrate Andrene’s life will be held at 11:00am on Friday, June 6, 2025, at Silver Creek United Methodist Church, 31994 Middle Crossing Rd, Dowagiac.
