Joel Carter Mitchell

Joel Carter Mitchell, 70, of Lawrence, Michigan, passed away at his home under hospice care on April 26, 2019. He was born November 8, 1948 to Jack and Jacquelyn (Roberts) Mitchell in Paw Paw, Michigan. Joel married LaVerne Holmes in 1967 and they shared 10 years of marriage before her passing in 1977. Joel acquired his Associates degree of Liberal Arts in 1980 from Kalamazoo Valley Community College. He later worked as a truck driver for Paw Paw Wine Distributors and as a construction worker. Joel had a love for music and played the guitar and piano. He liked spending time out of doors. Joel served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict.

Her is preceded in death by his father and former spouse, LaVerne Holmes.

Joel is survived by his wife, Eunice Orr of Lawrence; Mother, Jacqueline Mitchell of Mattawan; Children – Yvonne (Tyrone) Lawler, Jacqueline (Anthony) Mitchell, and Shelton (Rosa) Mitchell all of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Brothers – Jamison (Rose) Mitchell of Decatur, Jeffrey Mitchell of Paw Paw, and Jay (Terri) Mitchell of Gobles. Ten grandchildren and thirty one great grandchildren.

Extended Family – Juanita Jackson, Bernard Frazier, Robert (Brandy) Frazier, Maurice (Teresa) Frazier, Lolleta (Herbert) Daniels, Conchita Frazier, and Demetrices (Rita) Orr. Thirty-Eight grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren also survive.

A wake will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home in South Haven. Funeral Services will follow at 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home with Pastor Henry Allen officiating. A repast will be held following services at the VFW Hall at 1920 E. Kilgore Service Road, Portage, MI 49002. Joel will be laid to rest at Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, Michigan.
