Katherine Dempster

Katherine (Jewell) Dempster, 83, passed away Friday, March 8, 2019 at Atria Park Assisted Living in Tucker, Georgia. She was born November 4, 1935 to Loyd and Marion (Sylvester) Jewell in Detroit. She graduated from Albion College and later earned a Masters Degree from Western Michigan University. She worked as a school teacher in Illinois, Louisiana, and Michigan as well as a Limited Licensed Psychologist in Southwest Michigan.   

She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Don Dempster. 

Kathe is survived by her daughter – Diane Dempster of Tucker, GA, sons – Doug (Melanie) Dempster of Andover, MA and Andy (Christine) Dempster of Canton, MI, son-in-law – Dave Majchrzak of Tucker, GA, grandchildren – Aaron Mack, Jacob Majchrzak and Hannah Majchrzak of Tucker, GA, Michael Dempster and Nathan Dempster of Canton, MI and Alec Dempster of Andover, MA, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her companion, Dick Hart of South Haven, MI.

Kathe had a huge heart and loved to help the people in her family as well as through her career and volunteer work. Over the years, Kathe volunteered at Peace Lutheran Church, the Van Buren County CAN Council, AAUW, Beta Sigma Phi, Parents Anonymous, and many other organizations. She also served on the board of directors for Lutheran Social Services of Michigan as well as the board of Alumnae for Albion College. Kathe was a fierce advocate for families, teaching parenting classes, advocating for families and children in crisis, and even after retiring, was active in the Guardian ad Litem program in both Michigan and Florida. She also enjoyed tennis, playing bridge, piano and vocal music. 

A memorial service is scheduled for June 8, 2019 at Peace Lutheran Church in South Haven at noon followed by a luncheon. Contributions may be made in Kathe’s memory to Caring Circle Hospice at Home, 05055 Blue Star Highway, South Haven, Michigan 49090.
