Gary's Obituary
Gary Lee Moore, age 75, passed peacefully into eternity surrounded by family and in the arms of his wife Sandy on Saturday afternoon, July 3rd 2021, at The Buchanan Meadows where he spent the last five weeks of his life.
Gary had been in Hospice care since March before going into the Meadows for more acute custodial care.
Gary was diagnosed at Cleveland Clinic in 2016 with a rare degenerative brain condition called Semantic Cognitive Impairment. His passing was both a blessing and a relief as he had suffered for many years with this progressive condition. We’re so grateful that he is finally at peace.
Gary was born on April 13th, 1946 in South Bend, IN to Richard Moore and the late Eileen (Fry) Moore who preceded Gary in death on April 20, 2020. Gary is survived by his wife Sandy (Traver) Moore of Niles, MI. They were married on June 1st, 1974 in South Bend, IN at Sumption Prairie United Methodist Church. They recently observed their 47th anniversary. Gary is also survived by two daughters, Eryn Moore of Niles, MI and Amy (Greg) Yarbrough of Niles, MI, as well as an only grandchild, Collin Cronin of Niles, MI. Gary is additionally survived by his three siblings, Gail Moody of Edwardsburg, MI, Sandi (Brian) Stalker of South Bend, IN, and Mark (Sue) Moore of Stevensville, MI. He has several nieces and nephews as well as several great nieces and nephews who all enjoyed hearing family and friends tell “Uncle Gary Stories” from his youth.
Gary graduated from Greene Township High School in 1964 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Management from Purdue University in 1969. In 1993 he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lake Michigan College.
In 1958, Gary won the Soap Box Derby in South Bend, IN and went on to win Best Car Design at the Akron Ohio Soap Box Derby later that same year. After graduating from Purdue, he joined and spent six years serving in the Army Reserves while working at Valley Concrete in Niles, MI. In the 80’s he worked middle management in the long-haul transportation industry. After graduating from LMC, he began designing machinery for the automobile industry. He had finally found a career he loved and excelled at and was always highly regarded by his colleagues. He was called “Chief” by many he had mentored. He retired from Dane Systems in Stevensville, MI in 2012. He loved his country home in Buchanan. He enjoyed working in the yard and keeping the landscape beautiful. He had many talents and knew how to “Gary-rigg” most anything.
He loved riding his motorcycle, bicycling, sailing, and skiing both downhill and cross country. He will always be loved and missed. There has been a private family viewing and cremation has taken place. At a later date there will be a private ceremony to honor Gary’s life. We would like to thank The Buchanan Meadows and Caring Circle of Spectrum Lakeland for Hospice Care
