Elvie C. Schlutt, 92, of St. Joseph, MI, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, MI. Arrangements have been entrusted with Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, St. Joseph, MI. Elvie was born April 29, 1914, in Baroda, MI, to William and Emma (Wesner) Schlutt. On February 29, 1940, in Pokagon, MI, he married Beetris Amason. Elvie worked as a furnace operator at Auto Specialties for 43 years, retiring in 1974. He also had owned and operated Royalton Bait Shop for 53 years, where he served many generations of loyal customers. Elvie never met a stranger, he was a friend to all. Elvie and Beetris were members of Scottdale United Methodist Church for over 60 years. He was also very fond of his garden, especially his sun flowers, which were the talk of the neighborhood. Elvie, his wife, and their son James, loved wintering in Florida, for 30 years, where they were very active in the park association. Elvie’s family and many friends will miss him dearly. Elvie is survived by his wife of 66 years, Beetris; his four children, Glenn (Zona) Schlutt of Moncks Corner, SC, James Schlutt of St. Joseph, MI, Jo Ann (Tom) Farrington of Plainfield, IN, and Karla (Danny) Lieberman of St. Joseph, MI; four grandchildren, Daphne (William) Pemberton, Melissa Farrington (Wayne Nicholson), Jessica (John) Jones, and Kirkland Schlutt. He was the oldest of nine children, and is preceded by three brothers and one sister. Also preceding him in death are his parents-William and Emma Schlutt. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 1:00 p.m., at the Scottdale United Methodist Church, with Rev. Terry Schneider officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Berrien Springs, MI. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Sept. 12, from 4:00-7:00 p.m., at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, St. Joseph, MI.
