Linda's Obituary
Linda Sue Mannikko, 64, of Coloma, Michigan passed away, Saturday, December 5, 2015 at McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan.
Linda was born November 12, 1951 in Benton Harbor, Michigan, to Gustave W., Sr. and Anna Muril (Crafton) Radke. After graduating from Coloma High School in 1969 Linda served her country in the US Air Force as a Dental Technician. On active duty during the Vietnam War, she would repair the teeth of fellow soldiers before deployment to Vietnam. She continued her career as a Dental Technician as a civilian. After a successful career in the dental field, looking for adventure she changed careers to be an over the road truck driver for several years. She enjoyed her time on the road as she saw much of the country before retirement.
The sewing machine and crochet needle were an extension of Linda’s hands. Self-taught, she could sew clothing that rivaled store bought clothing, and her crocheted blankets were master level and designed without a pattern. When a new baby was on the way for family and friends Linda created an individualized blanket to match the baby’s room and made large, warm blankets for loved ones who were ill. Participating in 18th and 19th century historical reenactments, ceramic firing and painting, pencil drawing, gardening and swimming are just a few of the things that Linda enjoyed. Along with a profound love of chocolate, Linda also loved animals and spent time with many four legged friends. Throughout the years she would not be without a cat to snuggle. Additionally she bred and showed white Persian cats while stationed in Alaska and Cockatiel parrots upon moving back to Michigan. Above all else Linda was thankful for the opportunity to be a mother and grandmother.
Linda gave back to her community by leading Girl Scout Brownies from Troop 42 in Coloma and serving as head cook at Girl Scout Camp Shawadasee in Lawton, MI. She also made costumes for the ‘Kids’ Choir Production’ at the First Assembly of God in Benton Harbor.
Linda is survived by her daughter, Ami (Gary) Huff of Saint Joseph, MI; and siblings, Gustave, Jr. B (Shelly) Radke of Coloma, MI, Debby Radke of St. Joseph, and Patricia Radke of Palmdale, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Carol Holmes; and granddaughter, Ashli Mannikko.
Per Linda’s request cremation will take place and a Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of memorial donations, the family requests you leave a kind message, memory or condolence in Linda’s Memory Book online at www.starks-menchinger.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel and Cremation Services in St. Joseph, MI.
