Richard's Obituary

St. Joseph High School graduate and former Marine pilot, Richard Schalon, passed away at the age of 91.

Richard was born Jan. 3, 1931, and died May 16, 2022, at Whitcomb Senior Living Center, St. Joseph, where he had been a resident for several years.

Richard was a star college football player and was recruited by the Chicago Bears before joining the Marines. He loved to hunt, fish, garden, cook, hike in the mountains, and dream about building his own airplane. Most of all, he loved his "little people," the children he gathered around him, mentored, and watched grow up. True to Richard's giving spirit, his body was donated to science research.

Richard will be dearly missed by his son, Bill (Suzy) Schalon; stepson, John Sterling (Monica Moore); stepdaughter, Jennifer (Bob) Beccard; stepdaughter, Kathie (James) Nadeau; grandchildren: Evan, Stacey, Rachael, Marissa and Melia; great-grandchildren: Lauren and Sterling; special niece and nephews in the Ashley family. Along with numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family members and friends. The family would like to thank the caregivers at the Whitcomb for their loving care and companionship.

He is predeceased by his wife, Marlene; and both parents: Herbert and Helen; brother, Ronald; and sister Barbara.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, August 27, 2022 at Saron Lutheran Church, 510 Main St., St. Joseph. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph. Friends may visit from 9:30 A.M. until 10:30 A.M., Saturday at the church. Friends wishing to leave a condolence may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com.
