Carol's Obituary

Carol Alberta Stockman, 94, passed away on June 14, 2022. She was born in Benton Harbor to William H. and Madge Bartz (Birdsey).

Carol was married to her loving husband Allen R. Stockman from 1946 until his death in 1996. Together, they owned and operated the Stockman Farm on Scottdale Road.

Carol is preceded in death by her husband, her sister Joyce Both, and her grandson, Samuel Stockman.

Carol is survived by her five children, David (Jennifer) of New York, NY; Linda Cochran (Les) of Weaverville, NC; Steven (Robin) of Sterling, VA; Daniel (Mary) of St. Joseph; Gary (Darlene) of Howell, MI; and 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

In addition to farming, Carol was an outstanding community leader. She was elected and served as Berrien County Treasurer from 1984 to 1996. She was an active life-long member of the Scottdale United Methodist Church, guided the development of the Tryon 4-H Club, was a force in the Republican Party, and a founder/president of the Lakeshore Excellence Foundation. Carol helped found the Benton Harbor Street Ministry and for decades fundraised for the organization. She also helped create and led the Teen MOPS (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers) program at the Ministry.

Carol was a member/past president of the Blossomland United Way Board, an active leader in Church Women United, a member and president of the Berrien County Association of Churches, and for many years a monthly volunteer at the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen.

The death of Carol’s grandson in 2014 motivated her to organize community members to create a local program to assist families deal with substance addiction. Today, Carol’s Hope, named in her honor, is open 24/7 to facilitate addiction recovery.

A celebration of Carol’s life will be held on Thursday, July 14, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph followed by a reception at the funeral home. Visitation with family will begin at 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Carol’s Hope, 4032 M-139, St. Joseph, Michigan, 49085. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so on the Memory Wall.
